Read Psalm 39:4-6
4 “LORD,remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered-
how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.
My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;
at best,each of us is but a breath.” Interlude
6 We are merely moving shadows,
and all our busy rushing ends in nothing.
We heap up wealth,
not knowing who will spend it. (NLT)
This passage is a wonderful poetic reminder of the fragility of life. We really don’t know what tomorrow might bring. We may work very hard and gain power,success,wealth. But we ultimately have no power to choose our dying. We have no power to make such things last forever. Faced with our unknown futures we are powerless. And trying to guarantee our future by plotting and planning and scheming will do no good.
Yet this is not to draw a negative conclusion about life. Our life here is not valueless. Things are not out of control: they are merely out of our control. The Psalmist wrote these words in the context of a belief that he was in God’s good hands. So our powerlessness is experienced in the light of his power.
What will tomorrow bring? We can’t know. Will I be able to face whatever tomorrow may bring? We can know that God will be there with us. While we are powerless to dictate our own futures,we are invited to call on the power of God to engage those futures with confidence.
Our lives may hang by a thread,but God has hold of the thread.
