Read Romans 12:9-10
9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other. (NLT)
At the risk of being oversimplistic, life is all about relationships. With others, with self, with God. The legacies we leave behind may include businesses or buildings or ideas, but our chief legacies will always be people and relationships.
Following Jesus is all about relationships marked by love of God and others. And many of our encounters are such that we have the opportunity to enhance the dignity of the other person or diminish it. We can give life or drain life. So to quote the late Brennan Manning,”The success or failure of a given day is measured by the quality of our interest and compassion toward those around us.”
We may have arranged many meetings or formed many task forces. We may have worked hard at our studies or laboured hard at our jobs. We may have made some money or bought some goods. But ultimately it all comes down to relationships.
If we want some sort of barometer of the quality and shape of our discipleship,we need look no further than the quality and shape of our relationships.
Blessings
