Read Romans 5:8
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (NLT)
The scene is a lecture room in a Bible college. The lecturer puts a question to the students: “When I mention the word ‘God’,what word comes to mind?”
Answers were quickly offered. Interestingly,it was quite a while before the word ‘love’ was offered in response. It seems all sorts of words and connotations came to mind for these students before ‘love’ was mentioned. Why?
The Bible, after all, says God is love. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus are an expression of love. But perhaps we don’t want to succumb to cheap sentimentality, perhaps Bible-college students want to be more sophisticated or discerning than merely spouting out the love word. And it is true that there is more to God than this one word. And very true that his love is not mere niceness.
What do you imagine God’s first thought is when your name comes to his mind? Is it disappointment? Or anger? Or disapproval? Or rejection? It is nothing of the sort. God is bursting with love towards us. He is not blind or deaf to our imperfections but has dealt with all that in sending Jesus to die for us.
At the mention of your name in the depths of heaven,God is filled with love.
Blessings
