Read Ephesians 4:25

So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbours the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. (NLT)

Someone has suggested these are the top five lies:

  • “We’ll only stay five minutes.”
  • “This will be a short meeting.”
  • “Payment is on the way.”
  • “I’m from the government and am here to help you.”
  • “This hurts me more than it hurts you.”

Any of them familiar to you?

Telling lies makes community impossible because it makes trust impossible. If I can’t trust your words then I can’t trust my relationship with you. Try to imagine a family or community in which everyone lied all the time. Relationships would utterly fracture. Which is what Paul is getting at in this passage. Truth telling is vital because we need truth to safeguard our relationships.

Some of our lies are careless, others are malicious. Some are thoughtless exaggeration, others are intentional deception. Irrespective, they devalue our words and thus harm our relationships.

Our God doesn’t lie to us. He tells us the truth. Our faith in him is based on the fact that we believe what he says about himself and about us. If we figured that God was a liar, faith would be impossible. So when we speak the truth we reflect something of the character of a truth-telling God. And that’s no lie!
