Read Hebrews 11:6
It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him. (THE MESSAGE)
Lots of people claim to believe in God. A book was written recently titled The God I Believe In. It was a compilation of articles composed by various prominent people as to their views of God. From such works,it is clear ‘God’ can be a product of our own imaginings or wishes. God is not so much our creator as our creation.
The Bible makes it clear that there is only one God,the one revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. Any other God is no God at all. But even within the Christian tradition,we can be distorted in our beliefs. We may give lip service to God being personal and merciful, but perhaps we live as if he is some distant, impersonal deity. We may pray to him without any idea in our minds that a personal entity is hearing us.
As this passage says,it is not simply enough to believe that God is ‘there’. We need to go on to believe that he is ‘there for us’. He is actively involved in our lives,he truly cares for us and understands us. Some abstract being way out there in the far corner of the universe is not much help to us.
It may help us in our belief in God to always filter that belief through Jesus. Have fixed in our minds the works and words of Jesus. This saves us from believing in a mere abstraction or concept. We believe not just that God exists but that he lives within us and alongside us. We believe not just that he is there, but that he is there for us.
