Read Mark 9:41
If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah,I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded. (NLT)
We dare not despise the significance of small things. We might imagine we make the most impact by the notable, major interventions in others’ lives. We might be mistaken. As Jesus reminds us,doing the seemingly minor thing is commended by God and is a part of our response to him.
A preacher might imagine he or she will be remembered most for the powerful sermons preached. The truth might be that others might have valued a personal conversation far more. Or a generous benefactor might imagine the large donation they gave to a mission organisation did the most good whereas it might be that a short note of encouragement to the organisation leader did more good.
Never underestimate the power of the seemingly casual word, the spontaneous sentence, the ad hoc gesture. God has the capacity to use such little things to accomplish great things. Life lived under the oversight of God is shot through with supernatural significance even if we are not aware of it. In the providence of God the ordinary becomes extraordinary.
