The hope of Christmas

When I was much younger, I longed for a couple of special things. One was an atlas, the other was a set of encyclopaedias. (Which shows you the sort of child I was!). Each Christmas I would hope to get one or both. One Christmas I did get the atlas which remained a prized possession for years. Never did get the other thing I hoped for: the set of encyclopaedias.

Such is the nature of the hopes of human beings. Some come true, others remain unfulfilled. This Christmas there will be delights and disappointments for us. Some gifts we hope for will be gratefully received. Others won’t be under the Christmas tree. Some family gatherings will be wonderfully happy celebrations. Others will be marked by skating around old tensions or shadowed by memories of happier times.

Hope as mentioned in the Bible is rather different. It is a confident expectation rather than a vague longing. When the angels declared the birth of Jesus to be good news in that it was the beginning of God’s rescue mission for lost humanity, they were speaking the truth. Those who embrace who Jesus was and what he did for them can confidently expect God to be with them now and always.

This Christmas and every Christmas, whatever else may change, whatever else might delight or disappoint, that much is true.
