Read Psalm 62:8
O my people, trust in him at all times.
Pour out your heart to him,
for God is our refuge. (NLT)
In many of our relationships we need to censor our expression at times. Unburdening our problems onto an already burdened friend might not be sensitive. Telling someone our deepest secrets may not be wise. Sharing our utter exhilaration with another individual who has just received bad news might not be appropriate. Utter openness is not a necessary virtue.
Yet when it comes to our relating to God,things are different. When we speak,God is all ears. He is utterly attuned to not only what we consciously feel but also to what we might scarcely realise we feel. We can,in the words of the Psalmist, pour out our hearts to him.
He will discern the reality behind our sometimes confusing words; he can read between the lines. He will not turn aside impatiently if we can’t put things into words. Nor will he misunderstand us if we get a bit confused. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
To grasp this is not to succumb to self-absorbed communication with God. It is not all about us after all. And yet we do have feelings,we do have joys and pains. God will receive them all. No need to bottle things up for fear of being rejected or misunderstood. No need to worry about being boring or doctrinally doubtful. Pour it all out to God and let him lovingly sift through it all. Invite him to make sense of what might not make sense to us.
