Good news?

Read 1 Corinthians 1:18

The preaching of the cross is,I know, nonsense to those who are involved in this dying world, but to us who are being saved from that death it is nothing less than the power of God. (JBP)

Whenever interest rates fall, the media immediately rave about what good news that might be. It might be good news for those with debts, but for those with money invested it is not such good news. One person’s reduced mortgage repayment is another person’s reduced fixed-interest income.

Similarly with the weather. Many people in the rural areas are praying for rain whilst those in urban areas hope the rain stays away so their various outdoor pursuits are not spoiled. Rain can be good news or bad news.

Paul seems to speak of the Christian message as being both good news and bad news. For those who have turned their back on God and want nothing to do with him,it is not only foolishness but bad news. For it tells those who think they can do without God that they can do no such thing. The cross reminds people that merely being reasonably good is not sufficient for relationship with a perfect God.

But for those who know too well their need of mercy and help, the cross is great news. God has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. We need climb no ladder to God because he has come down to our level in the person of Jesus.

An offer of help is scornfully rejected by those who figure they need no help. The same offer is gratefully accepted by those who know their need of it. Bad news for some is good news for others.
