Read Psalm 18:31-33
31 For who is God except the LORD?
And who is a rock besides our God?-
32 the God who girded me with strength,
and made my way safe.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer,
and set me secure on the heights. (NRSV)
If you have ever been to a zoo and observed mountain goats, you will have noticed that they are able to move around in places that would cause us to stumble and fall. They look in great danger as they clamber over steep rocky slopes. But these animals are made in such a way that they are sure-footed in such terrain.
The Psalmist is reminding us that we too can be sure-footed in situations which appear dangerous. It is a reminder that our God does not keep us in comfortable places. We will negotiate steep and threatening terrain. The promise is that we can have firm footing at such times. It might look to an outsider that we are in danger of falling at any moment. God knows differently. He keeps us secure if not comfortable.
Most of us,if we are honest, would love to be in pleasant and easy situations most of the time. No threats,no fear of stumbling,no dangers. This is not our faith journey. We do have some times of comfort and ease, but also times on unpromising landscapes that shriek of danger. No matter: the God who has not promised an easy life has promised us sure footing when life gets hard.
