Read Philippians 1:3-6
I thank God for you Christians at Philippi whenever I think of you. My constant prayers for you are a real joy,for they bring back to my mind how we have worked together for the Gospel from the earliest days until now. I feel sure that the one who has begun his good work in you will go on developing it until the day of Jesus Christ. (JBP)
A young boy was sitting on the front doorstep of his house out in the country when a weary traveller trudged up the path to where he was sitting. “Why is the track to your house so long?” he asked the boy. The boy replied,”Well if it were any shorter it wouldn’t reach the house.” Can’t argue against that logic!
The Christian life can sometimes feel like a long trudge up a track that seems to go on forever. Will it ever end in the maturity that God has in store for us? The only road to Christian maturity is a long and winding road. Shortcuts won’t work. Instant solutions, quick fixes, overnight maturity-these are not options.
But we have the encouragement of texts like this. We didn’t launch ourselves on this journey: God launched us. And having gotten us started,he is not going to give up on us. He was at the starting line with us,he is our companion along the way,and he will be there at the finishing line. The ‘day of Jesus Christ’ is the day he returns to bring about the new heavens and the new earth. Then and only then will we become truly the people we were made to be.
Till then we journey on the road confident that we will reach our destination irrespective of the twists and turns, irrespective of the length. And we never travel alone.
Blessings
