Read Revelation 22:1-5

1 Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

3 No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. 4 And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no night there-no need for lamps or sun-for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. (NLT)

Our lives consist of many chapters. Some of these chapters are exciting, some mundane. Some chapters are happy, some are sad. Some are serene, others are troubled. We can’t do much about this. We can’t singlehandedly bend life to our will so it does our bidding. To use a cliché,we have to take the rough with the smooth. Not all chapters in our life story will have a happy ending.

And yet for those who belong to God through faith in Jesus,a happy ending is just what is in store for us. Even as the chapters of our life confront us with bewildering fluctuations,we can be sure how the story as a whole will end. This text is a metaphorical picture of the perfection of life in God’s heaven. No curse,no darkness,no sickness.

All the many and varied chapters of our life story will one day end. But our life story will not. We go on enjoying God and one another without the shadowy ambiguities of human frailty and waywardness. This side of heaven,we only get glimpses and tastes of such an existence. One day we will have the lot. No more mixed chapters, only a never-ending story in which we all live happily ever after.
