Collett Smart from the Raising Teens podcast chatted with Graeme Cowan, founding director of R U OK?
As a Board Director of R U OK?, he has watched this simple idea lead to substantial change. Audiences around the world frequently describe his style as authentic, relevant, compelling, and thought provoking.
In his earlier career he worked in senior leadership positions with Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and AT Kearney. In 2000 Graeme went through a 5-year episode of depression that his psychiatrist described as the worst he had ever treated.
Over 2 million Australians are currently supporting a loved one with depression
He emerged from this crisis with a different view about how we can increase our resilience, mood, and performance. Graeme is described by the Australian Financial Review as a “resilience expert”.
Graeme is the author of 5 books, including the internationally acclaimed ‘Back from the Brink’, which has a testimonial from the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and which has become a best seller in China.
Helping your loved one overcome depression
Over 2 million Australians are currently supporting a loved one with depression, yet many of them feel isolated and alone. Research shows they often feel frustrated, rejected, and unable to find the right help.
Alarmingly, 81% of caregivers report that their own mental or physical health has been adversely affected. Yet their support and care is essential to their loved one’s recovery.
Graeme’s new book directly addresses the questions of 2 million, often despairing, Australians who are trying to help a loved one with depression. The advice is based on interviews with over 300 depression sufferers and 100 caregivers. In a highly sympathetic style it lists the seven frustrations of carers as revealed by the research and then sensitively outlines possible solutions.

It is careful to highlight that each situation is unique. ‘Back From the Brink Too’ skillfully blends this information with first-hand accounts from carers for some of the interviewees from the first book to maintain continuity in the series. It also includes direct quotes from carers on what they have found most helpful in ensuring their own good health whilst supporting their loved one.
