Where do you think you get your sense of right and wrong from? What informs the moral views you hold, and the values you orient your life around? Is it possible to always make a truly ethical decision, or do we have to acknowledge we can’t always “do right” by everyone all the time?

American TV producer and screenwriter Michael Schur has mulled over these questions to no end, most notably in his ambitious “morality sitcom” The Good Place, and throughout a number of series he’s worked on including Brooklyn 99, Parks and Recreation and the US version of The Office.

This year, Michael released a book called How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Dilemma, digging into to some of moral philosophies that have shaped our world for centuries and that frame a lot of the storylines in The Good Place.

Joining Laura on the UNDISTRACTED podcast, Michael addressed how we define our personal values, whether our intentions are more important than our actions and how a belief in God fits into our approach to morality.
