They’re one of the world’s most loved choirs – and have brought hope, joy and inspiration to millions across the world. And now, the Soweto Gospel Choir are back in Australia.
Triple Grammy-award winners, Soweto Gospel Choir are currently on a 69-show national tour, their first after COVID – aptly titled, Hope. Soweto soprano singer and administrator Nobuhle Dlamani joined Hope Drive ahead of the choir’s show at Sydney Opera House and shared how special it was to be back in Australia.
“One of our founding members is actually Australian,” Nobuhle said.
“We love the energy, the people here are amazing.
“It’s home away from home.”
From humble beginnings to the global stage
Soweto Gospel Choir were formed in 2002 – out of the desire to create a traditional African Gospel Choir. Open auditions were held for singers across churches, schools and the streets of Johannesburg in South Africa. Three Grammy awards later – Soweto has cemented a place in the hearts of millions.
“Most of our shows are sold out so the response from the audience has been amazing,” Nobuhle remarked.
The choir’s new album and current tour, called Hope, shares the struggle of apartheid in South Africa.
“We are sharing that there is hope after darkness,” Nobuhle said.
“It’s also our first album after COVID – so it’s a full restoration of hope and faith.
“We are hopeful for the future again.”
A message of hope
Nobuhle hopes that anyone who sees the choir perform – come away a changed person, especially those struggling.
“There is light after darkness. You can pull through any situation,” Nobuhle encouraged.
“Come and experience laughter, love and healing.
“You’ll be crying but you’ll be happy at the same time.”
