Lion: 60 Second Movie Review [video]

Lion is not a Christian story, but it speaks powerfully to the almost universal feeling that we were meant to be somewhere else, and we will never be satisfied until we find it.

Lion is the story of Saroo, a loveable five-year-old India boy who gets separated from his family and ends up in the slums of Calcutta. When someone finally takes an interest in his welfare, it’s a Tasmanian couple who adopt him and bring him to Australia to raise. 15 years later when Saroo is at university, he discovers Google Earth, and wonders if it might help him rediscover his lost family.

60 Second Verdict: Lion from The Big Picture on Vimeo.

RATED: Lion is rated PG for mild themes (which Mark thinks might be an under-rating)

AUDIENCE: Adults who are up for the emotional rigour of a rescue from distressing slums and the emotional setbacks of a nearly hopeless quest.

WHAT’S GOOD: The incredible five year old Sunny Pawar steals the show. His performances as a lost boy justify a box of tissues per viewer. Nicole Kidman is also a stunner as his adopted mother.

Hope 103.2 is proudly supported by

WHAT’S NOT: Dev Patel is a little over-used and a little over-emotional in this role.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: Lion is not a Christian story, but it speaks powerfully to the almost universal feeling that we were meant to be somewhere else, and we will never be satisfied until we find it. It’s not hard to see the parallels with the home God promises to bring us to.
