Across her massive 14-year career, Australia’s Jessica Mauboy has sold “over 2.5 million units in Australia” – six albums have risen to top 10. She has also had 15 top 10 singles, and managed to find time to star in films like The Sapphires and Bran Nue Dae. But despite all of these achievements, one thing was not yet ticked off on her to-do list: an interview with Hope Breakfast’s Sam & Duncan.

Until today, that is, when Jess jumped on the phone to chat with the Brekky boys. And curiously, they found her at perhaps the quietest moment in her career.

“I’ve taken the last eight… nine months, just with self-empowerment. It’s the quietest I’ve ever been, but it’s really taken me to consider other people, communities, and also re-navigating to thinking about others who were finding it really difficult through this period,” Jessica told Hope 103.2.

Despite the slower pace that 2020 has forced Jessica to take, Mauboy is still incredibly passionate about her career.

“I’m still in love with it. There’s so much more that I want to do. I’m all fired up… I want to do more filming, more collaborating, more performances. I want to be able to be alive in creativity for when I do stop. I don’t know when – I probably won’t ever [stop], just because I’m so in love with it. There’s never a dull moment,” she said.

Sam & Duncan also spoke to the singing sensation about whether she could ever play a villain, her new single Butterfly, and her upcoming November 21 show at The Sydney Coliseum Theatre, her first for 2020.

“I’m secretly in awe and giddy about this show. To be in the physical light of actually performing again… we’re evolving and doing something different… there’ll be a new way and new flow,” Jessica said.
