In the first Hope Book Club episode for 2024, Georgia and special guest David Barker sit down and reminisce on their favourite reads of the summer.

Lola in the Mirror

Georgia can’t stop talking about Trent Dalton’s latest novel Lola in the Mirror. Five years after Boy Swallows Universe burst onto the literary scene, Dalton returns to the gritty Brisbane underworld with this stunning novel.

Lola in the Mirror follows the story of an unnamed teenage girl, who has been on the run with her mother for sixteen years. Together, with their motley crew of friends, they live in a van in a Brisbane scrapyard. However, the girl wishes for a bigger life, where she is a famous artist – and everyone knows her name.

But, when tragedy strikes two months before her eighteenth birthday, the girl’s story takes a dramatic turn. And she must discover who she is – alone.

The Exchange

David Barker, a self-proclaimed John Grisham super-fan, loved his latest novel The Exchange – which follows on from the acclaimed The Firm.

Readers are re-introduced to the world of Mitch and Abby McDeere – where Mitch finds himself at the centre of a court dispute with global ramifications. Once again, Mitch must stay one step ahead of his enemies – and take them down before it’s too late.

The Corsican Shadow

Arguably one of the world’s best adventure writers, Clive Cussler’s latest Dirk Pitt novel The Corsican Shadow had David gripped from beginning to end.

In WWII, as the German army blitzes Europe, a French curator must take a mysterious cargo out of the country. However, when his ship sinks, his cargo’s fate rests on a decrepit steamer, sailing under German fire.

Decades later, a diving expedition leads Dirk Pitt to a shipwreck’s cache of diamonds. But no sooner than discovered, the diamonds are stolen – all while vital water treatment facilities around the globe are being targeted, placing humanity in grave peril.

Only Dirk Pitt can locate the treasure that will preserve the soul of a nation… and save the world from catastrophe.
