Susan is making her way to Australia next month for the Omega Writers Conference, an event gathering Christian authors of all different genres and persuasions.

As a seasoned author, Susan says having a Christian community around her has been central to the success of her writing career.

“It’s such a solitary experience writing,” she said.

And while no one is going to actually help you write your book, perspective, Susan says, makes a huge difference.

“You can get so into the story and struggle so much with a plot,” she said.

“It’s such a solitary experience writing,” Susan said.

“Having people that can walk on the journey with you to ask you the right questions, give you advice [makes a huge difference].

“I mean, it’s a hard journey – it’s a very personal journey because we as writers take out pieces of our heart and our soul, and we put them on the paper or electronically for the world to see, and people can be mean sometimes, and it can feel very raw and very emotional and so we need people to come alongside us, to encourage us to keep our focus.

Having written 95 books, Susan says her goal has always been about walking with people along their journeys.

“I want to walk with the people on their journey, and for me, my characters and my stories are very series driven,” she said.

“I create what I call ‘found families’, and so it’s either search and rescue groups or paramilitary groups, or I do a family series a lot, and I find that people sort of fall in love with the idea of just having people to hang with.

“In a way, I love to bring that to my reader and say, look, here’s some people to hang out with, share life with and enjoy the journey with.”
