In this episode of The Hope Book Club Katrina Roe and Natasha Moore discuss the latest book releases from;

  • Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
  • Searching for Stars on an Island on Maine by Alan Lightman
  • The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak

In Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine – Eleanor Oliphant lives a socially isolated life designed to protect her from painful human interactions she doesn’t understand. But when Eleanor forms an unlikely friendship with Raymond, the slightly childish, but kind-hearted IT guy at work, Eleanor starts to realise that things need to change in her life. A heart-warming book about loneliness that shows it’s never too late to get brave. This book is soon being made into a movie by Reese Witherspoon.

Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine by Alan Lightman – One summer evening, while looking at the stars from a small boat at sea, Lightman experiences a sense of the sublime – a feeling of merging with something larger than himself, something absolute and immaterial. In this meditative text, a physicist explores the intersection of science and faith and the human quest for truth and meaning.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak – Katrina explores one of the most influential young adult stories of our time, by re-reading it with her 11-year-old. Liesel is a young girl in Nazi Germany who is forced to grow up too fast when her foster-family hide a Jewish refugee in their basement at the height of World War 2. The kindness of her Papa, her friendship with her devoted neighbour Rudy and her love of books sustain her through this dark time in Germany’s history. A wonderful book to share with children aged 12 and up.
