One name that comes to mind is Laird Hamilton, who is known as the greatest living big-wave surfer. Hamilton is regarded by surfing historians as the “all time best of the best” at big-wave surfing. It certainly scares me just thinking of what he does – huge waves 50- to 100-feet-high don’t worry him as he aggressively goes out to tackle them. I’m glad it’s not me. Laird Hamilton was quoted as saying:
“If you can look at one of those waves and you don’t believe that there is something greater than we are, then you’ve got some serious analysing to do and you should go sit under a tree for a very long time”.
Quite a challenging statement. Laird senses that there is something greater than we are.
Some men were trying to answer the question, “Where did the earth come from?” After compiling their data and feeding it into a sophisticated supercomputer, they pushed the answer button with great anticipation. Lights flashed, buzzers sounded, and finally the computer spat out the answer:
See Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God…”
God is the Designer and the Creator of all things
This is a declaration that God has always been. He’s had no beginning and He will have no end. This is stated strongly in Deuteronomy 33:27 (NIV):
“The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.”

Augustine was once asked what God was doing before He created the world. He thought for a moment and replied, “He was creating it for people who ask questions like that.”
This is a huge topic, but worth considering. Look at the ocean and the waves that Laird Hamilton and others surf – it’s one small example of the greatness of God. God is the name we give to the Creator. He created the planet and left fingerprints all over it. The wind, waves, the beauty of a sunset, the complexity of a drop of water, birds and animals. There is so much around us that points to a power greater than ourselves. A creator Being named God. God is the point of origin, the Designer and the Creator of all things.
The last part of Genesis 1:1 says He “…created the heavens and the earth.”
The Hebrew word for “create” means “to create out of nothing”. In other words, God the Creator brings design out of disorder; He created the cosmos out of chaos; He birthed beauty out of barrenness, and He continues to do the same in lives today.
The creation declares the glory of its Creator
Let’s look at just a few more phrases from different verses in Genesis 1:
- “So God made the expanse…” (7)
- “…He also made the stars.” (16)
- “So God created the great creatures of the sea…” (21)
- “God made the wild animals…” (25)
- “God saw all that He had made and it was very good…” (31)
It is no accident that the first thing God wanted us to know about Himself is that He is the Creator. The whole revelation of Scripture is rooted in this fact, from Genesis to the Book of Revelation.
On Christmas Eve 1968, the three astronauts of Apollo 8 circled the dark side of the moon and headed for home. As their tiny capsule floated through space, they gazed on planet earth. What do you think they did? They did not quote Einstein, Shakespeare or Darwin. There was only one statement that could capture the magnificence of that moment. As billions of people all around the world listened, an astronaut acknowledged God as Creator as he read these words: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” If you’re willing to look, you will see. And because He is the Creator, He is greater than that which He has created. That means you can trust Him because there’s nothing in your life that is greater than He is. He can solve whatever problem you have, if you will trust Him by faith.
Psalms 19 verse 1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” God made the beautiful heavens – do you agree? He created all things for a purpose and we are a very important element within that purpose that He has. Isn’t it fascinating of and by itself to know that He created something from nothing? It is something we really can’t grasp, can we? We know that it is true because that is what God’s Word tells us.
When we look to the sun, the moon, the stars and the planets, are we in awe? I’m sure we remember that David in Psalm 8 stated that. That he was in awe over the creation; that when he looked to the heavens and saw what God had created he stood in awe. There are other places through the Psalms where he did the same.
