Sue will help us understand what anxiety sufferers are experiencing; and for those who experience it, to learn not to listen to the voice of fear.

SMBC Hot Topics: Rest and Sleep – Croydon

Life can be wearisome. What is sleep, and what is rest, according to the Bible? Mark Stephens who lectures in Biblical and Integrative Studies at Excelsia College, will unpack Scripture’s foundational theological ideas about rest in the present, in the future, and some redemptive implications of the question.

He will help equip us to critique biblically our own assumptions and practices as incessantly busy (and perhaps rest-deprived) Christians in a restless culture.

Mastering Your Money (5 Nights) – Waterloo

This is a five-week program to provide people with a sound approach to financial management. Although effectively managing your income and expenditure is one of the most basic skills required for life, most people have had no education or discipleship on this vital subject from home, school or church.

Mastering Your Money is one of the most important elements involved in maintaining viable marriage and home where parents raise stable families. Whether married or single, learning to budget with intelligence and discipline is the key for turning dreams about home ownership and living a life of generosity into a reality.

Church Event: LIVE LOUD // Week at the Upper Room – Wahroonga

“The greatest use of life is to spend it doing something that will outlast it.”  – William James. What legacy will YOU leave behind? It’s an important question. Yet, we often miss the point.

As 21st century Christians, are we called to be successful? Popular? Wealthy?…Or persecuted for His sake? (2 Timothy 3:12). It’s radical. It’s counter-cultural. And it’s hard.

At LIVE LOUD // Week at the Upper Room, Michael A. Polite, chaplain at Andrews University (USA), will be preaching about how God wants us to live our legacy, make waves, and LIVE LOUD for Him. Check out Michael’s Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/bpolite4life. Check FB page for more details.

Is our quest for travel harmful or helpful for Christian life? Does the Bible guide us about whether Christians should travel?

Author, lecturer and avid traveller Stephen Liggins helps us think wisely and bionically about the what, why and how of overseas travel for Christians.

  • What does it mean to travel the world as ‘citizens of heaven’ (Philippians 3:20)?
  • Practical advice about how to plan ahead to make our time overseas a benefit, not a peril, for our spiritual life

Church Event: Dealing with guilt and shame – Newtown

Guilt and shame are two of the most powerful realities in human life. Most of us regard them as overbearingly negative experiences that must be avoided or removed if we are to find wholeness and happiness in our lives.

In our next CCL event, Dan Wu will expose the biblical truth about guilt and shame – what guilt and shame are, how they can be both negative _and_ positive experiences in our Christian lives, and how they relate to the most important reality affecting human life: the glory of God in the cross of Jesus Christ.

“Are Miracles Scientific?” DVD presentation – Bligh Park

Can observational science verify when miracles occur?

This excellent presentation by Dr Jonathan Sarfati will help you learn to think biblically and logically about miracles. Many attacks on miracles misunderstand what science can and can’t do. The attacks sometimes resort to arguing in circles.

Come along and find out if it is sensible to trust the biblical accounts of miracles?

SMBC Hot Topics: Is the Pope Catholic? – Croydon

In many ways, Pope Francis appears as a reformer: a breath of fresh air in the Roman Catholic Church. He engages intentionally with the world and its leaders. He has said Protestants and Catholics “agree on the doctrine of justification” and that on this point, Martin Luther “did not err.”

Is the Reformation having an impact on the Catholic Church? Rachel Ciano, an SMBC church history lecturer, will consider this possibility.

SMBC Hot Topics is a series of 10 talks held on Wednesday evenings. They are ideal for those who want their hearts and minds challenged.

Theology Event: Reclaiming Community – Macquarie Park

Everyone is invited to “Reclaiming Community – Mission, Church and Aboriginal Wisdom” with Brooke Prentis, an Aboriginal Christian leader and descendant of the Waka Waka peoples.

She will take us on a journey through the colonial history of mission in Australia and introduce us to the way that Aboriginal peoples now see Christian mission. She will argue that colonisation still exists, but will outline a way out of this impasse for the Churches.

She describes this as ‘reclaiming community’, drawing on the wisdom available from the insights and practice of Aboriginal Christian leaders, and believes that this understanding is vital for the mission and health of every church in Australia today.

SMBC Hot Topics (Talk 6) – Croydon

ARE THE OLD TESTAMENT LAWS FOR CHRISTIANS? with KIT BARKER
If the Law was for the old covenant people of God, how are Christians to relate to it as we live by grace and the gospel? Jesus seemed to set the Law aside; yet he was also very positive about it. Is it still relevant, and are we required to keep the Ten Commandments? Or even the whole Old Testament law? We’re not saved by keeping it – but is it still important? We will explore these questions with Kit Barker, who teaches Old Testament at SMBC.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: A BIBLICAL AND PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE with SANDY GRANT
In Ephesians, Paul told married women to ‘submit’ to their husbands. Psychologists, counsellors and others criticise this, seeing it as an excuse for perpetrating domestic violence, and for victims to patiently endure that. Sandy, who pastors in Wollongong, will explore this biblically and pastorally, suggesting appropriate ways for Christians and church leaders to think and behave, and to identify and help abuse victims.

HOW FAR IS TOO FAR IN A HOSTILE WORLD? with DEREK BROTHERSON
When it comes to the gospel and conversion to Christ, how should a new believer in a religiously hostile culture live and worship? What does becoming all things to all people (1 Corinthians 9) look like for both missionaries and new believers in contexts like this? Contextualisation versus syncretism. Derek, who works cross-culturally overseas, is living and researching ‘insider movements’ from biblical foundations and a practical life perspective.
