SMBC Hot Topics (Talk 8) – Croydon

HOW FAR IS TOO FAR IN A HOSTILE WORLD? with DEREK BROTHERSON
When it comes to the gospel and conversion to Christ, how should a new believer in a religiously hostile culture live and worship? What does becoming all things to all people (1 Corinthians 9) look like for both missionaries and new believers in contexts like this? Contextualisation versus syncretism. Derek, who works cross-culturally overseas, is living and researching ‘insider movements’ from biblical foundations and a practical life perspective.

Theology Event: ‘More Than Heroes’ – A Morning with Mary J. Evans – City

The Old Testament is full of strange and complicated stories, and parts that we tend to skip over in our Bible reading because they seem too difficult to understand. How could these parts of the Bible – often involving women – possibly be relevant to our 21st Century lives? Mary J. Evans will explore some difficult stories of the Old Testament involving women, and show us that they can be understood and applied to our lives today.

Join past and present MAC students and other Christian women, as we meet to learn from Mary as she opens God’s word.

Kara mentors, lectures at Mary Andrews College, and wrote a recently shortlisted book, ‘Workship: How to Use Your Work to Worship God’.

Theology Event: Screening – “How the Earth Was Shaped” – Bligh Park

This DVD presents convincing evidence that the receding waters of Noah’s flood carved the world we see today.

The surface of the earth presents many puzzles for uniformitarian scientists, but can be explained by catastrophic runoff late in Noah’s Flood. Great vertical tectonics and massive erosion occurred at this time. Planation surfaces were cut into solid rock, and very hard rocks were transported many hundreds of kilometres.

This presentation will last for one hour. Admission is free. Come and see how the earth around us today was shaped by Noah’s flood, as recorded in the first book of the Bible.

CHRISTIAN PARENTING with HARRIET CONNOR
Harriet, a mother, has recently published a biblical theology of parenting, Big Picture Parents, which was shortlisted for the Australian Christian Book of the Year. She will challenge us to sort carefully through the clamorous voices of our surrounding culture, including its assumptions about the necessity of happiness and perfection, as she unearths what the whole Bible has to teach us about wise Christian parenting.

(SMBC Hot Topics is a series of 10 talks held on Wednesday evenings. They are ideal for those who want their hearts and minds challenged. Come to one, some or all ten!)

Theology Event: Christian freedom and the illusions of contemporary freedom – Newtown

“The greatest enemy of freedom is freedom: Christian freedom and the illusions of contemporary freedom.”

Surely we can all agree that “freedom” is a good thing—something we should all protect and promote as widely as possible. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as that: there are starkly different visions of “freedom” at play. In fact, what Western culture regards as “freedom” may, in fact, be the enemy of true freedom.

Hear world renowned speaker, author and apologist Os Guinness speak on the “illusions of contemporary freedom” and true Christian freedom.
